However, the Dhaka City is exempt from the shutdown.

Sunday's strike call came amid the BNP-led alliance's indefinite countrywide transport blockade announced on Jan 5.

A statement by JCD's Office Secretary Abdus Sattar Patwary said the programme was to protest against the ‘besieging’ of BNP chief Khaleda Zia and demand release of arrested party leaders.

JCD said they would enforce the shutdown in Narsinghdi, Narayanganj, Gazipur, Tangail, Munshiganj, Manikganj, Comilla, Brahmanbarhia, Kishoreganj, Mymensingh, Sherpur, Jamalpur and Netrokona apart from Dhaka district.

The BNP's Bogra unit has extended its shutdown programme in the district by another 24 hours.

The party's local units at different districts and Upazilas, too, have called for daylong strikes for the same reason as the JCD.
