New IGP, RAB DG, DMP commissioner named in a major police shake-up

The government in a major shake-up of the police has named Additional IGP AKM Shahidul Hoque the new Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Benazir Ahmed has been made Director General of Rapid Action Battalion and he will replace Mokhlesur Rahman.
The home ministry on Tuesday issued orders to this end taking effective from Wednesday.
DIG Asaduzzaman Mia will succeed Ahmed while Hoque will replace the longest-serving IGP Hassan Mahmood Khandker.
RAB chief Rahman, too, will retire soon, having headed the elite police unit for several years.
New IGP Hoque hails from Shariatpur while Benazir Ahmed's home district is Gopalganj.
New DMP Commissioner Mia hails from Faridpur.
Hoque, who studied social welfare at Dhaka University, joined Bangladesh Police in 1986.
He also did his LLB and MBA from Dhaka University and a private university respectively.
Hoque was made DMP commissioner after he served as superintendent of police in different districts including Chittagong. Before the promotion, he was the additional IGP (administration).
Additional IGP Mokhlesur Rahman, who was heading police’s Criminal Investigation Department, is replacing Hoque. Rahman hails from Tangail.
Benazir Ahmed studied English literature at Dhaka University and is doing PhD at an American university.
Ahmed joined an international training on fighting terrorism and served the UN peacekeeping missions in Bosnia and Kosovo.
Longest serving IGP retires
Outgoing IGP Khandker has served the police force for the longest period having taken over on Aug 31, 2010.
Before that he was the chief of RAB.
Khandker studied English literature at Dhaka University and joined police in 1984.
He is a recipient of Bangladesh Police Medal and President Police Medal.
Bangladesh Police got Independence Day Award during Khandker’s tenure.
