"The Jamuna was flowing 41 centimeters above the danger level at the Sirajganj point on Friday morning,” Executive Engineer of the Sirajganj Water Development Board Babul Chandra Sheel said.

Water level had risen by 16 centimeters in the past 24 hours.

Water levels of the other rivers have also risen after an increase in the Jamuna water level. Heavy currents are exerting enormous pressure on the Brahmaputra flood protection embankment.

UNO of Kazipur Shafiul Islam said, "New areas have been inundated after a ring embankment was washed away near Kazipur's Meghai area. This has also left some 600 families stranded in water-logged areas."

In addition, the Sirajganj-Kazipur road had been inundated near the Kazipur Police Station. The Roads and Highways Department was dropping sandbags there to fight the flood.

Despite government relief efforts in the inundated area, no private body had ventured to reach relief to the flood-hit people. The flood-affected people in remote areas, however, complained they had not received any relief material yet.

In the shoal areas of the district, thousands of houses have been inundated by one to three-feet-deep water. The number of patients suffering from water-borne diseases has risen alarmingly in those areas.

Deputy Commissioner Billal Hossain said, "The flood situation worsened because of a rise in the water level. In every Upazila, public representatives and district administration officials have been distributing relief. We've already requested for more relief materials."
