Baby Maudud’s work will be glowing: Prof Anisuzzaman

Professor Anisuzzaman has said examples of honesty, simplicity and sense of responsibility that AN Mahfuza Khatun Baby Maudud set with her proud presence in different fields will be glowing for long.

Baby Maudud, a journalist, writer, main former MP, died on Friday after a long battle with cancer at the age of 66.

Anisuzzaman, a teacher of Maudud at Dhaka University Bangla Department, rushed to the hospital hearing of her demise.

He said he knew her since she was a student of the Bangla Department.

“Baby Maudud was very active in Bangladesh’s progressive movements and struggles. She has shown honesty and dutifulness throughout her life.

“She used to live a very simple life,” he added.

Anisuzzaman, Professor Emeritus at the University of Dhaka and winner of India's Padma Bhushan award, called her a pioneer among women journalists in Bangladesh.

Maudud did her master’s in 1971 and took to journalism when she was a Dhaka University student.

She was involved in student movement.

Maudud played her role in all the progressive movements in Bangladesh including those against Ayub Khan’s rule and for justice for war crimes.

Bangladesh Workers Party President and Telecommunications Minister Rashed Khan Menon said Maudud’s contribution to journalism would be remembered with respect.

Ruling Awami League’s Presidium member Nuh-Ul Alam Lenin said Maudud was active in all democratic movements starting from anti-Ayub agitations in 1967.

National Press Club’s former General Secretary Shafiqur Rahman said they were Chhatra League workers and Baby Maudud was Chhatra Union activist at the university.

“We joined the Liberation War together under the umbrella of Chhatra Sangram Parisad after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman made the ‘Six-point Declaration’.

Baby Maudud was born in Kolkata on June 23, 1948.

Beginning her career as a journalist in 1967, she worked for the BBC, Daily Sangbad, Ittefaq, BSS, and Weekly Bichitra before joining bdnews24.com.

She was elected to a reserved women's seat in the Ninth Parliament on Awami League's nomination.
