Rebel candidate wins Tungiparha

An Awami League renegade has upset the Awami League applecart in the Upazila none other than Tungiparha.
Gazi Golam Mostofa defeated the party-backed chairman aspirant in the elections at Gopalganj’s Tungiparha, the constituency of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Results announced by Assistant Returning Officer Md Ruhul Amin on Saturday night showed that Mostofa bagged 30,965 votes to be elected chairman.
His rival, the party-endorsed Md Solaiman Biswas got 11,923 votes.
Ruling party-backed vice-chairman candidate Tapas Kumar Biswas won with 12,845 votes while his nearest contender Abul Kalam Azad got 7,696 votes.
Afsana Masud Mini, another Awami League-blessed aspirant, won the female vice-chairman post bagging 19, 826 votes.
Marred by violence, the third phase of Upazila Parishad elections took place on Saturday at 81 Upazilas in 41 districts. Two persons died in poll-related violence in Bagerhat and Shariatpur.
Meanwhile, BNP-backed candidate Md Shariful Islam was elected chairman at Kishoreganj Sadar Upazila, the constituency of Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam.
Shariful Islam bagged 61,794 votes to beat the ruling party-backed candidate Syed Ashfaqul Islam who got 47,978 votes.
