Musa Ibrahim, Niaz Morshed Patwari and Sifat Fahmida Nawshin reached the top of the 5,642-metre or 18,510-foot mountain, situated along Russia-Georgia border in West Caucasus, at around 8:40am local time on Wednesday.
They hoisted the national flag there, Musa Ibrahim, the first Bangladeshi to conquer the world’s highest peak Mount Everest, said in an email.
Dalhat Olmejhev, a resident of Kabardino-Balkaria Republic in Russia, guided them.
Wasfia Nazreen, the second Bangladeshi women to conquer the Mount Everest, scaled Mount Elbrus on Mar 28 this year.
Everest Academy and North Alpine Club Bangladesh (NACB) organised the expedition with support from Summit Group, Far-East Islami Life Insurance and Abdul Monem Limited.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Bangladesh Tourism Board, Russian Embassy in Bangladesh and the sports and tourism ministries of Russia’s Kabardino-Balkaria Republic aided the programme.
The Bangladeshi mountaineering team started for Mt. Elbrus from Russian capital Moscow on June 13.
They had to return to the main base camp on mountain hotel ‘Gara-Bashi’ on June 22 after climbing 16,400 feet of the mountain due to heavy snowstorm.
They conquered the Western summit of the mountain in the second attempt on June 26.
As part of Bangladesh-Russia friendship mountaineering, they hoisted the flags of Bangladesh, Russia and Kabardino-Balkaria Republic.
Mt. Elbrus is about 800 metres higher than Mont Blanc and the highest peak in the Alps. Elbrus is often called ‘two-headed mountain’ as it has two summits.
