They have been identified as Saad Al Nahin, 24, Mohammad Kawsar, 26, Mohammad Kamal, 23 and ‘Kamal’ 28.
DMP Deputy Commissioner Molla Nazrul Islam said the four were detained from the capital’s Mirpur, Jatrabari and Dhaka University areas in an overnight raid on Sunday.
He said Nahin is a first semester student of DU’s Market Department’s Evening MBA course.
Police produced the detainees in front of the reporters at a press conference at the DMP headquarters at around 11.30am.
Nazrul said they confessed to attacking Asif during preliminary interrogation.
“Nahin told us they attacked blogger Asif following directives from one Abdul Karim, alias Jaber, who is a religious bigot,” he said.
A group of unknown assailants had stabbed blogger Asif Mohiuddin in the capital’s Uttara on Jan 14.
He had come under attack on his way home from his office at Garib Nawaz Road under Uttara Sector-11 at around 10pm.
Asif had sustained five injuries in the neck and back and was admitted to the Dhaka Medical Hospital.
The police official said the detainees were members of a gang of some 15 members.
The Deputy Commissioner claimed some members of that gang were involved in killing Ahmed Rajib Haider, who was murdered on Feb 15 in front of his residence in Mirpur.
