The government is ‘dilly-dallying’ in the investigation into the murder of slain journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Mehrun Runi, Sagar’s mother Saleha Manir has alleged.

“The government had promised to arrest the killers within 48 hours but they are wasting time now,” she told a rally organised by the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) to arrest the ‘real killers’.

“When your 48-hour deadline (to arrest the killers) will end,” she asked the Home Minister.

Maasranga Television News Editor Sagar and ATN Bangla Senior Correspondent Runi were killed at their West Rajabazar residence in the capital on Feb 11 last year.

The murder outraged the nation, as police, detectives and political bigwigs turned up at the couple's residence, promising speedy justice.

Erstwhile Home Minister Shahara Khatun, while visiting the residence of the slain journalists, had promised that the killers would be identified and arrested within 48 hours. But, she has drawn a flak as nothing happened.

“What wrong did my son do that he had to be killed. What would be my answer to Megh (the couple’s son) if the killers are not tried.”

One year has passed since the murder, but the law enforcers are yet to arrest the ‘real killers’, forcing journalists to take to the streets.

DRU President Shahed Chowdhury said the arrests made so far in connection with the case were nothing but a ‘drama’.

Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir recently claimed credit for cracking the case, and producing a list of eight ‘killers’ said that ‘they have been identified’. Neither the journalists nor the family members of the victims found the government’s version credible.
