Pro-BNP, Jamaat newspapers snatched

A group of youths snatched away all copies of Amar Desh, Naya Diganta and Sangram on Sunday morning at Netrokona, saying they will not allow papers inciting religious passions to be sold.

The group appeared at 8:00am and took away the entire stock of these three newspapers from the distributor outlet, said the outlet’s Manager Abu Siddique.

According to him, the youths shouted slogans against these newspapers for whipping up religious passions and said they will not allow their sale in Netrokona.

Five cases were filed on Saturday against daily Amar Desh Acting Editor Mahmudur Rahman over inciting religious violence and vandalism.

Shahbag’s Ganajagaran Mancha have also been demanding arrest of Mahmudur Rahman and a ban on Sangram and Naya Diganta which are known to be pro-Jamaat.

Meanwhile, Saiful Islam, 26, Tareq Mia, 18, Shamim Ahmed, 19, Piash, 20 and Abu Taher Azad who police say are Jamaat and Islami Chhatra Shibir activists were nabbed Saturday night from Netrokona’s Kendua and Madan upazilas, said Kendua Police Station Officer in-Charge Avi Ranjan Dev. They were accused of trying to foment trouble.
