“A group of Shibir activists gathered at the city’s BRTC intersection around 10am on Monday and suddenly hurled brickbats on police,” Chittagong Metropolitan Police’s Assistant Commissioner Abdul Mannan told bdnews24.com.

He said two constables – Masud Karim and ‘Jamal’ – were injured and were hospitalised.

Shibir is the student front of Jamaat-e-Islami, several of whose top leaders are facing trials on war crime charges.

Around the same time Jamaat-Shibir activists attacked the police in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Khulna and Dinajpur in much the same way. bdnews24.com correspondents in the districts said a large number of people, mainly policemen, were injured in the attacks.

In Dhaka, at least 21 policemen were injured. Witnesses told bdnews24.com that the agitators had smashed over 100 vehicles and set ablaze at least five, including a police van.

The Jamaat-Shibir had been protesting since last November demanding release of their party leaders who are facing the war crimes trials. Now they have started attacking police all over the country and are resorting to vandalism like torching vehicles. They also reportedly attacked Law Minister Shafique Ahmed’s motorcade in Dhaka’s Karwan Bazaar area on Nov 13.
