Rajshahi, Jan 28 (bdnews24.com) - A Rajshahi special tribunal handed death penalties to two Islamist militants for the 2004 murder Rajshahi University economics professor Mohammad Yunus .
Tribunal judge Md Manjurul Basit pronounced the sentence on Thursday against two members of outlawed Islamist outfit Jamatul Mujahideen Bangladesh.
The convicts are Shahid Ullah of Sarakdanga village in Naogaon Sadar—and elder brother of top JMB leader Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai—and Shafi Ullah from Itagachha village of Satkhira Sadar.
Six other accused were acquitted.
Prof Yunus, a leading economist who was also vice president of the Bangladesh Economists Association, was murdered on December 24, 2004.
There was no eye-witness to the murder, but the judge, handing doen the sentence, said the evidence proved Shahid Ullah and Shafi Ullah were guilty of the murder
