UNESCO proclaims Baul Songs as 'Masterpiece of the Oral Heritage of Humanity'

Dhaka Jan 22 (BDNEWS)- The Baul genre of Songs of Bangladesh have been proclaimed as 'Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity' by UNESCO.
In a recent letter written to the Bangladesh Ambassador in Paris, Rieks Smeets, chief of Intangible Heritage of Humanity Section of the UNESCO, congratulated Bangladesh and sent a diploma signed by Koichiro Matsuura, Director General of UNESCO in this regard.
Smeets wrote in his communication to the Bangladesh Ambassador and Permanent Representative to UNESCO Mahmood Hasan: The candidature file submitted by your country was evaluated by competent NGOs prior to its submission to the consideration of the International Jury for the proclamation which met from 21 to 24 November 2005. After studying the file, the Jury recommended to the Director General the inscription of this cultural expression on the list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Henceforth 'The Baul Song' figures among the 90 Masterpieces proclaimed by UNESCO since 2001.
