One of the main accused of the country's ever-biggest arms haul case in Chittagong Haji Yakub was taken into an 8-day police remand Friday.
Dhaka, March 18 (BDNEWS) – One of the main accused of the country's ever-biggest arms haul case in Chittagong Haji Yakub was taken into an 8-day police remand Friday.
He was taken under Mirpur police custody and might be shifted under the joint interrogation cell (JIC) within a day or two, sources said.
According to Mirpur police, Yakub was produced before the court in the morning seeking remand for ten days and the court granted eight-day remand.
Hazi Yaqub was arrested from the capital's Mirpur area early Thursday.
The 53-year-old, Yakub, remained in hideouts for the last 11 months.
According to sources, personnel from different agencies were quizzing him to unearth the masterminds of the arms smuggling.
He would be interrogated by the JIC and Chittagong police as both the wings were investigating the case, sources said.
Mirpur thana officer in-charge (OC) Intejeruddin said that police also arrested Nasiruddin, who gave shelter to Haji Yakub in his house at Lalkuthi in Mirpur.
The OC said Nasir was produced before the court seeking his remand but decision about him was yet to be taken by the court.
When contacted, Deputy Commissioner (DC-North) Majharul Huq told BDNEWS that Yakub would be interrogated from Friday night as the court granted his remand.
Haji Yakub has been living at 'Habib Manjil' for 11 months, as both Yakub and Nasir are the followers of a same peer.
At least ten truckloads of heavy arms and ammunitions were seized on 2 April 2004 from Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL) jetty on the bank of river Karnafuly while those were being unloaded from a vessel.
