Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof ASM Maksud Kamal has resigned while wishing the university well.
He told bdnews24.com that he submitted his resignation to the Ministry of Education on Saturday.
He said his duty was to see to the good of the university. As such, he decided that if it was best to resign at this time, then it would be good for the university.
He added that students had also called for him to step down.
“I wrote in my letter that I wish for the future success of the university that is our life.”
Kamal was appointed as the 29th vice chancellor to Dhaka University on Oct 15. He took on his duties on Nov 4.
Prof Kamal said he had already decided to resign and discussed the issue with a respected advisor to the government, and took a decision accordingly.
“I wanted to discuss the situation with the new government and then step aside. But I had to resign early. There was no discussion. It was not courteous.”
Regarding the pro-vice chancellor’s resignation, he said: “It is their own decision. I cannot ask anyone to resign. It is their own decision.”
DU Registrar Prabir Kumar Sarkar had also applied for early retirement, Kamal said.
On Thursday, DU Proctor Prof Maksudur Rahman and 13 assistant proctors resigned.
