The outgoing officer, Main Uddin, an Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Home Affairs, was appointed on Dec 5.

Brig Gen Syed Iftekhar Uddin takes over as the new IG Prisons.

The Ministry of Public Administration’s Senior Secretary Iqbal Sobhan Sikder said the army officer, appointed on Tuesday, was on deputation.

Iftekhar Uddin had been on deputation as the Director of the Central Medical Store under the health ministry.

When approached on Wednesday, Main Uddin said he had heard of the change.

"I was given the additional responsibility of Inspector General of Prisons," he told bdnews24.com.

Secretary Sikder said Main Uddin would return to his previous post, as prison job was an additional responsibility.

The post had fallen vacant after previous IG Prisons Md Ashraful Islam Khan's contract ended on Nov 17.
