Huda gets ‘lion’ as election officials assign symbols to 132 Dhaka city candidates

The Election Commission has assigned electoral symbols to 132 candidates for the 15 parliamentary constituencies in Dhaka metropolitan.

Returning Officer KM Ali Azam allocated the symbols to the candidates on Monday after scrutiny and appeal hearings of nomination papers.  

Former BNP leader Nazmul Huda, who wanted to contest as a nominee of the Awami League-led Grand Alliance, is the only independent candidate in the capital.

Huda, now the chief of the Trinamool BNP, has been allocated the ‘lion’ symbol while the others received the symbols of their parties.

The Dhaka-17 seat, for which Huda is competing, also has Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad with the ‘plough’ symbol and film star Akbar Hossain Pathan Farooque with the ruling Awami League’s ‘boat’.

The Bangladesh Jatiya Party-BJP’s Andaleeve Rahman Partho is the BNP-led alliance’s candidate with ‘paddy sheaf’ symbol.

Bangladesh National Front’s SM Abul Kalam Azad MP, who won the last elections in 2014, is contesting with the ‘television’ symbol. 

Dhaka-14 has the highest number of candidates – 14.
