Among the heavyweights, the party has kept faith in Public Administration Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, Chief Whip ASM Feroz, and former home minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir.

But Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya and former land minister Rezaul Karim Hira have failed to get ticket.

Before finalising the share of seats with all of its allies, the ruling party has nominated actor-activist Akbar Hossain Pathan Farooque for a Dhaka seat, for which Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad is a candidate.

The Jatiya Party is contesting in the election under the umbrella of the Awami League-led Grand Alliance, but with its own plough logo.

The Awami League also confirmed 16 candidates from its allies in the ruling 14-Party coalition and AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury-led Bikalpadhara Bangladesh of the Jukto Front alliance.

The ruling party has “almost finalised” 240 of its candidates for the Dec 30 election, General Secretary Obaidul Quader said.

The 14-Party and Bikalpadhara candidates are using the Awami League’s boat symbol in the election.

Sharif Nurul Ambia, who heads a faction of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal or JaSaD, had initially been nominated as a candidate with the Awami League’s boat logo, but finally he did not receive the letter confirming the nomination.

Party chief Sheikh Hasina left the Rangpur-6 seat for Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury. The prime minister on Friday night handed the letter confirming the nomination to Shirin.
