While screening the nomination papers on Sunday, Returning Officer and Dhaka Divisional Commissioner KM Ali Azam told the media that the Bangladesh Bank data showed Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal President Afroza has defaulted on repayment of credit at Standard Chartered Bank and Agrani Bank.

Besides these, she is also a defaulter as a guarantor of loans at Dutch-Bangla Bank and has fallen behind payment of phone bills, according to Azam.

BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas said the loan and bill issues of his wife had been halted by the High Court.

The returning officer then gave him two hours to bring the central bank’s permission to let his wife run for the election.

As the BNP leader could not produce it, the returning officer declared Afroza disqualified as a candidate for the election.

The ruling Awami League has nominated Saber Hossain Chowdhury MP for the Dhaka-9 seat.
