The newspaper reported on Tuesday that the two came under the attack at Roman Road in Bethnal Green on Monday night.

One of them, identified in the report as Shakwat Hussain, 24, was due to be released from Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, according to the report.

Shawkat and his friend staggered into a shop, screaming in agony for help after the liquid was thrown on them around 7pm that day.

The shopkeeper told MailOnline: "They were two Bengali boys who came into the shop. They had acid on their face, and they were burning - their skin was peeling off.

"I just gave them water, they were shouting, and I gave them water and they were washing their faces.  They said: 'We have got acid on us, we have got acid on us'," he added, according to the report.

A police officer at the scene also told MailOnline that 'the colour of their faces had changed' and the arm of a jacket one man was wearing had melted away.

"Shocking footage of the aftermath shows the men had litres of bottled water poured over them before fire fighters arrived and used their hoses to douse them down," the Daily Mail reported with a number of images and footage of the incident.

Footage posted online by Chris Lennon showed a topless man pouring water on to his face as he is surrounded by five paramedics as a policeman watches on.

The incident occurred 11 days after five people were injured in a similar acid attacks in North and East London.

According to the Mail, areas such as the West Midlands and Essex have also seen large rises in the number of incidents – but more than half of the UK's acid attacks take place in the capital.

West Midlands Police said that they are issuing guidelines for dealing with corrosive liquids by national police policy and 1,000 acid relief kits were given to Met Office police officers.

The Daily Mail also reported after speaking to a 'gang member' that attackers are now choosing acid rather than weapons to attack their victims because currently there is no penalty for being caught in possession of acid-based chemicals as opposed to a knife or a gun in London.

"It is a win-win situation," the newspaper quoted the 'gang member' as saying.
