The demolition of the slum on land belonging to the Public Works Department was stayed by the High Court for three months on Jan 21 when local residents and shanty dwellers clashed with police during the drive.

The court froze the demolition order after hearing an appeal by rights organisation Ain o Shalish Kendra (ASK).

Public Works Department had already bulldozed a quarter of the slum when the order reached them.

On Jan 24, the State moved the Supreme Court’s chamber judge against the order, which forwarded the matter for a regular appeals hearing.

A four-member bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha heard the matter on Sunday.

It also instructed the High Court to resolve the rule issued on the matter in four weeks.
