Slain Virginia TV journalists shot both in head and body

The Virginia television journalists killed by a former co-worker during a live broadcast were shot both in the head and body, a coroner saidon Friday, as more details surfaced about the attack.

Reporter Alison Parker, 24, and cameraman Adam Ward, 27, of Roanoke CBS-affiliate WDBJ7 were slain during a live interview on Wednesday by disgruntled former employee Vester Flanagan. Flanagan later shot himself and died of his wound.

The deaths of Parker and Ward have been ruled homicides, said a spokeswoman with the Virginia medical examiner's office in Roanoke, about 200 miles (320 km) southwest of Washington.

Parker died of gunshot wounds to her head and chest. Ward died of shots to his head and torso, she said.

Flanagan, 41, shot himself on a highway in northern Virginia's Fauquier County while being chased by police. Officers found a pistol, ammunition, clothing, letters, and other items in his rented car.

A search warrant shows police found a .40-caliber Glock pistol with a magazine and ammunition, six additional Glock magazines, 9mm ammunition and a Glock pistol case.

Police also turned up handwritten and typed letters and notes, a bookbag with papers and cards, 17 stamped letters, a to-do list, a black hat and a bag with random items, according to the warrant filed in Fauquier County Circuit Court.

A briefcase held three license plates, a wig, a shawl, an umbrella and sunglasses, it said.

Police were tipped to Flanagan's involvement in the shooting when he sent a text message to an unidentified friend "making reference to having done something stupid," the warrant said.

In a fax to ABC News after the shooting, Flanagan, who was black, called himself a "powder keg" of anger over what he saw as racial discrimination at work and elsewhere in the United States.
