Three people were being treated in an intensive care unit of a hospital in the capital, Colombo, hospital sources said.

Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake told Reuters four men sprayed bullets from a car driving past the outdoor rally in Colombo attended by about 600 people. He was unhurt.

"They seemed to target me. I am safe. Four people from a car shot at in all directions," he said.

Karunanayake said the violence was an attempt to discredit the government ahead of general elections on the Indian Ocean island, where memories are still fresh of decades of political violence during a civil war which ended in 2009.
