Right in the middle of a small forest near Chatillon, a little village in Southern Belgium, is a graveyard of abandoned and beautiful rusty cars.

'Chatillion Car Graveyard' one of the biggest and most intriguing car cemeteries in the world.

US soldiers, stationed in this region during World War II, once owned these cars but it is known how they managed to acquire them in the middle of the war, according to amusingplanet.com.

At the end of the war, the troops were sent back to the US. They could not take the vehicles with them as the shipment cost was too high.

They decided to hide these vehicles in a forest until they could come back and retrieve them.

The cars were driven up a hill where they were nicely parked somehow hidden from the outside world.

Not a single car was retrieved.

Locals however disagree. They claim it’s simply a dumping ground for old vehicles made after the WWII.

At one point there were four car graveyards around Chatillon with as many as 500 vehicles but today only one remains.

Other cars had since enriched the spooky collection, says demilked.com.

Corrosion and decay worn down the vehicles over time.

Locals and car collectors are believed to have stolen many of the cars.

In 2010, the graveyard was removed due to environmental reasons.

This unusual graveyard became a popular tourist attraction.

But it seems now that the forest has been cleared and what remains are the rusting cars patiently waiting for their former owners to collect them.
