Three police officers were "lightly wounded" in the attack on Saturday morning, but there were no casualties among the public, the news agency said citing the local government.

"The gangsters drove a vehicle to ram the building of the public security bureau of Yecheng County in southern Xinjiang and set off explosives," it said.

China has been cracking down after a spate of recent attacks centred around the far-western region of Xinjiang. Chinese authorities executed over a dozen people for terrorist attacks in the region earlier this month and three others for an attack on Beijing's central Tiananmen Square.

In May, 31 people were killed in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang region, after attackers threw explosive into an open market. It was the worst attack China had suffered in years.
