Rosberg now has 159 points, only 10 less than Hamilton. Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel is third with 120 points.

Hamilton started the race from pole position on Sunday, but it was Rosberg who led into Turn 1.

From there on the German never looked back, securing his third win of the season to reduce Hamilton’s title advantage.

Hamilton, also handicapped by a five second time penalty for crossing the white line on the pit exit, crossed the line 3.8secs behind Rosberg, while Felipe Massa scored his first and Williams’ second podium of the season in third.

The race started in dramatic fashion when Kimi Raikkonen appeared to lose the rear of his Ferrari exiting Turn 2.

He was hit from behind by Fernando Alonso, and the two men ended up in the barriers, with the McLaren atop the nose of the Ferrari.

Neither driver was hurt and stewards are investigating the incident.

Sebastian Vettel had to fight his way back to fourth after his race for Ferrari was compromised by a slow pit stop, while Valtteri Bottas consolidated a strong Grand Prix for Williams in fifth, ahead of the Force India's Nico Hulkenberg.

Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen lost out in late-race battle with Lotus’s Pastor Maldonado for seventh, with Force India’s Sergio Perez and Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo completing the top ten.

Adding to McLaren’s woes, Jenson Button was forced to retire early in the race after with technical problems.

The only other non-finisher was Will Stevens with a suspected oil leak on his Marussia.
