Internet explodes in anger after Juba Mohila League leaders take 'selfie' with Khadiza

Three leaders of ruling Awami League's affiliate Juba Mohila League have drawn intense public anger over some photos, apparently group selfies, taken beside the bed of Khadiza Begum Nargis, who was critically wounded by a Bangladesh Chhatra League leader.

Juba Mohila League General Secretary and former MP Apu Ukil, incumbent reserved seat MP Sabina Akter Tuhin and the organisation's Joint Secretary Kohale Quddus Mukti went to visit Khadiza at Square Hospital in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Netizens flooded the social media with angry posts after the photos seemingly taken by Tuhin were posted on the trio's Facebook walls. Tuhin and Ukil's single photos with Khadiza, battling for her life, were also posted.

"Inhumanity at its bestest," wrote one Kazi Fatiha Binte Habib. "Doesn't change the fact though," she wrote again in reply to a comment noting that one of the persons in the photo is an MP.

"If I am not wrong she's mentally disordered person," one Tanzim Rafin said.

In reaction to the criticism, Ukil told bdnews24.com: "There had been a rumour that Khadiza had died.

"We went to see her today and Tuhin posted the photos on Facebook to show that she (Khadiza) is recovering," she said.

Doctors said on Tuesday Khadiza had ‘5 to 10 percent chances’ of staying alive and needed to be kept under close observation for 72 hours to know if she can survive.

Tuhin also made a similar claim like that of Ukil in a Facebook post.

She or Mukti could not be reached immediately for comment but all the three shared Tuhin's posts in reaction to the criticism.

One Aiyub Ashrafun commented, "Why on earth a selfie at the ICU should be needed to show that she is alive? Aren't the updates given by the media sufficient?"

"...but with lipsticks, wedding party make-up on! How lame excuse is that?" wrote one Shoyeb Mahmud.

Tuhin in another post claimed the photos were not selfies and taken by one 'Chhoto Bhai Shahadat'.

She also slated her critics for their 'silence' over the person who filmed the hacking of Khadiza 'rather than saving her'.

"Begum Zia (BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia) wears pink lipstick throughout the year but (the critics) do not notice it and consider her as a true Muslim, and when we have gone there wearing sober dresses, now there are criticisms," she wrote.

Khadiza, a student of Sylhet Government Women's College, was hacked by BCL's Shahjalal University of Science and Technology unit leader Badrul Alam when she went out after taking a test at MC College reportedly for refusing to get into a relationship.
