'Probe' into CJ's wealth shows AL vengeance: BNP

BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha is facing the vengeance of the ruling Awami League if media reports of investigation into his wealth are true.

"The people are seeing this as the Awami League's vengeance towards the chief justice," he said.

He told a news conference at the party's Naya Paltan office on Friday that the media reported the investigations were being done by the National Board of Revenue and Bangladesh Bank.

"This investigation comes on the heels of aggressive comments by MPs and ministers on the 16th amendment verdict. The people think this is the start of the government's revenge," he said.

He said the report on the investigation into the chief justice's wealth proves the government was using its agencies like Anti-Corruption Commission and NBR to 'take revenge'.

However, the bdnews24.com could not verify the report on the investigation published in a BNP mouthpiece.  

The Awami League and its affiliates have continued protests against some observations by the chief justice in the 16th amendment verdict. The observations related to Bangladesh's politics, past dictatorships, electoral commission, corruption, governance and judiciary.

Mohila Awami League President Safia Khatun also alleged at a rally in front of the National Press Club on Friday that 'the chief justice undermined female lawmakers in the verdict'.

"The women will not accept it. We will continue our protests until we get justice for this," she said.

Food Minister Qamrul Islam alleged at the rally that the BNP was using the Supreme Court for political gains.
