BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the comment after calling an urgent media briefing at the party's Naya Paltan offices on Tuesday.

"We are astonished by the aggressive comments made by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina against the Supreme Court, the judiciary, judges and even the chief justice," he said.

The Awami League government has been locked in a conflict with Chief Justice SK Sinha ever since the Appellate Division upheld a High Court verdict cancelling the 16th Amendment to the Constitution.

The move took away parliament's power to sack top judges over misconduct and incapacity.

"We believe that the government by targeting the judiciary over its verdict has created an environment ominous for the people and politics," Fakhrul said.
