The couple told an interaction with journalists at Sadique's ancestral home in Jessore's Keshabpur on Tuesday that "Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked Shabana to join politics in a recent meeting in Dhaka".
"I can't enter politics now because I have to give time to my children. But my husband wants to join politics. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, too, wants him in politics," Shabana said.
She added her husband expressed his desire to get the Awami League's nomination in the next parliamentary election from Jessore-6 constituency during the meeting with Hasina.
"That's when the prime minister proposed that Shabana join politics," he said.
He also said he was preparing to contest the election as an Awami League candidate.
The couple organised a programme to impart Quran lessons among children in Sadique's Borenga village. Religious Affairs Minister Matior Rahman inaugurated it.
The minister also announced Tk 200,000 in government donation for the programme and Tk 100,000 for a mosque in the area.
Bangladesh Film Artists' Association President, actor Misha Saodagor also attended the event.
