Return of BNP motorcade after attacks in Rangunia was wrong: Gayeshwar

BNP Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy thinks party leaders including the secretary general should not have returned from Chittagong’s Rangunia after their convoy came under attack there last week.

At a discussion on Saturday, he said he did not agree with the leaders’ decision to come back. “An attack was carried out, but I’ll have to reach my destination braving that attack."

“They (ruling party) will always create obstructions and they won’t let us go where we want to go. But we’ll have to tackle those and reach our destination.”

“I won’t be able to carry out my movement and implement the people’s wishes if I follow the government’s orders. I would say that obstacles will come, and we’ll have to tackle them. Battles will follow obstacles and we’ll have to win that fight,” said Roy.

On June 18, a motorcade of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and several other leaders was attacked in Rangunia Upazila when they were on their way to Rangamati to meet local people affected by the recent landslides.

The convoy went back to Chittagong later. Senior BNP leader Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, who was accompanying Fakhrul, had blamed Awami League's local MP Hasan Mahmud for the attack.

Rejecting the blame, Hasan alleged that the car carrying Fakhrul hit two persons in Ichhakhali and that the angry locals attacked them.

Roy on Saturday also came down hard on Road Transport Minister Obaidul Quader for his recent statements regarding the so-called developments made by the government.

He said Quader was always making jokes about the BNP. It is audacious for Quader to make fun of BNP, he said. "He talks like an actor.”

Addressing the ruling party general secretary, Roy said, “Awami League leaders and activists feel embarrassed hearing what you say. You should talk less.”
