The party's senior joint secretary general came up with his observation at a press conference on Friday.

He claimed a syndicate of the ruling party’s leaders and activists were making billions by raising prices of essentials this Ramadan.

“The commerce minister has failed to keep his promise for stablising prices,” he said.

Coarse rice was being sold for Tk 48-50 per kilograms, which is the highest rate in the world, according to the BNP leader.

“The people are starving but the government has been exporting rice to Sri Lanka,” he added.

Price of rice rose by 32 percent per kilogram in the last one year, as per a government survey.

Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) published a report last month that showed coarse rice being sold at Tk 42-45 per kg whereas the rate was Tk 32-24 a year ago.

Price of medium-grain rice rose by 14.29 percent to reach Tk 46-50 in one year, says TCB. For fine rice, the price was up by seven percent.
