“It simply doesn’t add up. All those billions simply poured into increasing capacity!” said Nazrul Islam Khan, a standing committee member, on Wednesday.

“So where did our money go? The people aren’t getting electricity anyway,” he said.

The intolerable temperatures during the season’s third heatwave have been central to the public complaints. Majority of towns are suffering frequent outages.

A light show at Hatirjheel last year celebrated the country’s capacity to generate 15,000 MW of power but demands still cannot be met.

The demand was for 9,700MW on Wednesday against a generation capacity for 8,648MW, according to the Power Development Board or PDB.

The deficit was 1,052MW and there will be outages to cover 979MW.
