"BNP's claim that the counting was faulty is absurd," he told reporters after attending an event in Dhaka on Friday.

Thursday's election will set an example for peaceful voting in Bangladesh, he said.

"It was without doubt a model election. There have been a lot of speculations but those have been proven wrong," said the minister.

An hour after Awami League's Selina Hayat Ivy was declared the winner on Thursday, her main challenger, BNP's Sakhawat Hossain Khan, claimed there were anomalies in the counting of votes while maintaining that the voting was held in a fair process.

The BNP's candidate lost to Awami League’s Ivy by a margin of 79,568 votes in Thursday’s keenly watched elections.

On Friday the BNP demanded a judicial investigation of the election.

"This is not just Awami League's victory, but a victory for democracy, the people of Narayanganj and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina."
