President's talks on new Election Commission kick off with meeting BNP delegation

President Md Abdul Hamid's dialogue with political parties over constituting a new Election Commission has commenced with meeting a delegation of the BNP.

An 11-member delegation led by Chairperson Khaleda Zia held an hour-long meeting at the Bangabhaban on Sunday.

The party, which describes the current EC as 'pliant', has been calling the president to form an independent commission that can work free of government influence during the upcoming general election.

The Khaleda-led delegation left the Bangabhaban around 5:37pm.

Any details over the discussions are yet to be available from either from the BNP or the president's office.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi had informed the media that Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will hold a press conference in the evening.

A media call is also expected by the Bangabhaban's press wing.

Apart from Khaleda and Mirza Fakhrul, the BNP delegation which met the president on Sunday, included policymaking National Standing Committee members Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Jamiruddin Sircar, Mahbubur Rahman, Rafiqul Islam Mia, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Muyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.
