BNP candidate Sakhawat Hossain Khan says in response that if elected he will take forward Ivy's ‘incomplete’ work.

The seven mayoral candidates of NCC came up with their pledges at a programme organised by Sushashoner Janno Nagorik (SHUJAN) on Saturday ahead of the Dec 22 polls.

"I've worked just the way you wanted in past five years...I won't say I could complete it. But 70 percent of the work has been done. If the people of Narayanganj re-elect me, I will finish the remaining 30 percent," Ivy said at the programme.

In reply to a question, BNP candidate Khan said he will build a citizens' movement against terrorism and a 'beautiful and modern' city if he gets the people's mandate.

"I don't personally want to hinder the ongoing development work. I will of course take them forward," he said.

Each candidate took three questions from the voters.

Ivy, who represented the city for 13 years, said she would not choose to make 'big pledges'.

"Local governments can't do whatever they want. You are speaking about the traffic congestions, but I can't do anything about it, even if I want to. It also won't be possible for the city corporation to resolve water and gas issues at a time. Many organisations are linked to these issues," she said.

In reply to a query on hiking trade licence fees, she said it was the government which hiked the fees through gazette notification. "I had nothing to do here," she said.

Asked what she would do for the women, who make half of the voter list, Ivy said, "We arranged loans on easy terms for destitute women in many areas.

"You've spoken about separate public toilets for women. But there are separate arrangements for women at the public toilets," she said.

BNP candidate Khan pledged to build a green city by cleaning all garbage in Narayanganj.

"I will build footbridges and free the footpaths from grabbers. I will unite the people to do these," he said.

Lawyer Khan, who stood for the plaintiff of the sensational seven-murder case, said his main agenda will be to build a social movement against terrorism and drug abuse.

"In that case, I want to form a unity council with the citizens. They will lead the movement," he said.

Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) candidate Kamal Prodhan announced to withdraw his nomination and back Khan in the elections.

The other candidates included Mahbubur Rahman Ismail of Biplobi Workers Party and Rashed Ferdous of Kalyan Party.
