Tarique is BNP's senior vice-chairman and son of the party chief Khaleda Zia.

He was ordered to surrender within a month at judicial court in three extortion cases filed during the army-backed caretaker regime.

Stay orders on two more corruption cases were also vacated against Tarique.

The BNP leader has been living in London for the past eight years, ostensibly for medical treatment.

But he has been politically active in London, often issuing statements that have led to major controversies.

The government has issued orders to block the reporting of such statements in the media.

Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah gave the order after hearing the prosecution.

Tarique’s lawyer Mahbub Uddin Khokon was in court to represent his client but was not given the chance to plead since the BNP leader is considered a fugitive.
