The party will be asking authorities for permission to use the venue on either of those two days, said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a press briefing on Thursday.

“Given the way Awami League has used the state’s resources for their party’s council, it seems fair to give us the same opportunity,” he said. “We hope to have their cooperation on this matter.”

On Nov 4, 1975 Sector Commander Khaled Mosharraf led a coup against Ziaur Rahman and placed him under house arrest.

On Nov 7, an uprising led by Sector Commander Colonel Abu Taher freed Zia and defeated the coup.

BNP commemorates the occasion as ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’.

The Awami League does not recognise the occasion and instead refers to Nov 7 as ‘Freedom Fighters Massacre Day’ or ‘GI-Public Uprising Day’.

The BNP secretary general also outlined a 10-day itinerary in honour of ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’ at the Naya Paltan BNP Headquarters on Thursday morning.

The national flag would be raised above the party headquarters on Nov 7, he said.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will place flowers on the grave of her husband, the late President Ziaur Rahman, at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, he said.

A series of cultural programs, discussions, rallies and meetings of freedom fighters will be held in Dhaka, he added.

BNP and its allies will release a special supplement with posters and fliers for the event.

Instructions have been provided to the district, Upazila and all other branches of the party about the plans for the event, said Secretary General Fakhrul.
