Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir of the ruling Awami League’s main rival lashed out at her at an event on the occasion of ‘Martyr Jehad Day’ on Monday.

"The country does not belong to Khaleda Zia alone, it does not belong to only Sheikh Hasina or (HM) Ershad. The country belongs to the 160 million people."

"It cannot be that we sit and watch while someone destroys democracy and plays around with it and deprives us of our rights," he thundered.

On Oct 10 1990, street agitation intensified following the death by police firing of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader Najir Uddin Jehad, leading to the ouster of the Ershad-led government of the day.

Addressing a commemorative discussion at the Dhaka Reporters' Unity in the capital, the opposition leader accused the Awami League government of running an autocratic rule.

"There are umpteen examples in human history where some annihilate an entire race to hide their own shortcomings. We are facing the same situation," he alleged.

Mirza Fakhrul also claimed that more than 1,000 BNP leaders and workers have lost their lives protesting against the government.
