The coffin carrying the 74-year old’s remains was taken to his Mohakhali DOHS home in an ambulance after the completion of formalities at Shahjalal International Airport on Wednesday evening.

His younger son Shah Reazul Hannan was with Hannan Shah when he died at the Raffles Heart Centre in Singapore early on Tuesday.

Reazul brought his body back on Wednesday. His elder brother Shah Rezaul Hannan received them at the airport.

Many senior BNP leaders, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, were present there at the time

After his body was brought home, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia went there around 9:30pm and condoled the grief-stricken members of Shah’s family.

The veteran politician and former army officer was admitted to the capital’s Combined Military Hospital (CMH) on Sep 6 and had been on life support.

On Sep 11, he was flown to Singapore in an air ambulance. He underwent surgery there, but passed away 16 days later.

Hannan Shah, a member of the BNP's policymaking National Standing Committee, entered politics after retiring from the Bangladesh army as a brigadier general.

Born in October 1941 in Kapasia, Gazipur, Shah served as jute minister in the 1991-96 BNP government. He was elected MP several times from Gazipur-4 constituency, his ancestral home.

After his death, the first Namaz-e-Janaza was held at Angullia Mosque in Singapore’s Serangoon. BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan and local party leaders and activists and Bangladeshi expatriates attended the funeral prayers.

A second Janaza will be held at Mohakhali DOHS Jame Mosque at 10am on Thursday, another at the South Plaza of Parliament at 11:30am, and a fourth one before the BNP’s Naya Paltan headquarters after Zuhr prayers in the afternoon.

His body will be kept at the CMH mortuary on Thursday night.

On Friday, his remains will be taken to Gazipur. After three funeral prayers at three spots there, Hannan Shah will be buried beside his father’s grave at his ancestral home Chala Bazar.
