The BNP chairperson went to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar with the members of the newly formed National Standing Committee, Advisory Council and Central Executive Committee on Monday.

The leaders and activists of the party also held a special prayer there.

The BNP named 17 of the 19 members of the Standing Committee on Aug 6, nearly four and a half months after its Sixth National Council.

It also announced the 73-member Advisory Council and the fully fledged central committee of 502.

Some of the front-tanking leaders criticised the new committee, saying those who had sided with the 2007-'08 military-controlled government have been hand-picked.

The activists started gathering at the grave site in the afternoon. A huge national flag and the party flag were hung.

bdnews24.com Chief Political Correspondent Sumon Mahmud said the number of BNP activists who gathered at the park was the highest in a year.

They welcomed Khaleda with applause when she reached there around 5:15pm.

Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Tariqul Islam, ASM Hannan Shah, Mirza Abbas, Nazrul Islam Khan, and Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir were present.

New member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury was also there.

Another new face in the committee, Salahuddin Ahmed, is facing trial in India on charges of trespassing.

Khaleda’s son, BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman, who has also been drafted in the committee, is in the UK.

After placing wreath, Mirza Fakhrul said he hoped the new committee would help ‘revive democracy'.
