The attack, moments before the country's biggest Eid congregation began on Thursday morning, left four people, including two police constables, dead and several others injured.

Stressing national unity to thwart terrorism and militancy, the BNP chairperson in a statement later in the day demanded the immediate arrests of those responsible for the attack.

"The bloody attack at Sholakia has taken place within a week of the Gulshan terror attack. Several people including two policemen and Jharna Rani Bhoumik have been killed.

"Those who kill innocent people like Bhoumik are cowards. They are against mankind’s progress. I strongly condemn this attack," Khaleda said.

She expressed deep respect for the two policemen killed on duty. "The nation will never forget their sacrifice."

Denouncing the deadly attack, Jatiya Party Chairman Ershad in his statement said, "Those who can attack on the Eid day are the enemies of Islam. They must be identified and stopped for good."

The people must remain united against terrorists, he said.

"We are peace loving people. Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians have living here in harmony for thousands of years. Such incidents will spread panic among people."

The attack in Sholakia follows the deadliest terror attack in Bangladesh that killed 20 hostages, mostly foreigners, at an upscale restaurant in the heart of the Dhaka's diplomatic estate last Friday night.

Two police constables were killed when their detachment at Azimuddin High School gate, a kilometre away from the Sholakia ground, came under attack.

An unidentified attacker was killed after police traded heavy gunfire with the miscreants, along with a Hindu housewife Jharna Rani Bhoumik, who was hit by a stray bullet that penetrated her hut, officials said.
