The party has hoped that the neighbour would remain in favour of ‘democracy-seeking people’ instead.

Speaking at a protest rally in the capital on Monday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “What we always hope is that India will be with the democracy-seeking people of Bangladesh. It won’t favour any force or government that conducts crackdown on the people.”

He made the statement referring to media reports that Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj expressed satisfaction at Bangladesh government’s anti-militancy crackdown.
She reportedly said Bangladesh has done the right thing to combat militancy.
The BNP organised the rally in protest against ‘mass arrests’ across the country.
According to police, around 12,000 people were had been arrested in the first four days of the weeklong drive beginning on Jun 10.
Police said law enforcers caught 179 suspected militants in the seven days.
BNP, however, alleged that law enforcers rounded up over 3,000 of its leaders and activists on the pretext of the crackdown.
