The party’s General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, in a statement issued over 36 hours after Saturday’s murder, said, “The miscreants are getting reckless due to violence, illegal activities and culture of impunity.”

Prof Siddiquee was hacked to death near his house in Rajshahi City early on Saturday morning.

Middle-East-based radical group Islamic State claimed responsibility for the murder. Police have refuted the claim saying Bangladeshi militants are involved in the murder.

Mirza Fakhrul claimed the country was in ‘horrible anarchy’.

“The wrongdoers are getting encouraged by the unelected government’s wrongdoings. That’s why fatal incidents are increasing,” he said.

He also said the international militant groups’ claims of credit for a series of murders have caused panic among the people.

He demanded arrest of the ‘real killers’ of Prof Siddiquee and their exemplary punishment.

Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, a former vice-president of Rajshahi University Central Student Union (RUCSU), said the government is to be blamed for the murder of Prof Siddiquee because it ‘failed to identify and try the real criminals involved in the previous murders in the university’.
