Leaders from both committees, one led by Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu and Shirin Akhter, and the other by Sharif Nurul Ambia and Nazmul Haque Prodhan, met at reserved seat MP Lutfa Taher’s house on Thursday.

Ambia said the discussion was at the initial stage and no decision was taken.

“There was no progress in the discussion though we sat for unification,” he said.

“We sat as we want unification but I don’t think Mr Inu  really wants a unification, though he says so,” he added.

Inu and Shirin did not comment on the discussion.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal or JaSoD, a left-wing party in the ruling Awami League-led coalition, suffered a split at its national council last month after a group broke away in protest against an attempt by its President Inu to install Shirin as general secretary.

The Election Commission has recognised the Inu-led faction as the mainstream party and allowed it to use the polls symbol, ‘torch’.
