Awami League is filing false cases to stay in power at any cost, claims BNP
The BNP has accused the Awami League of putting opposition leaders and activists behind bars, implicating them in false cases, to cling on to power.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the allegation at a meeting in Dhaka on Tuesday. The meeting was convened to protest journalist Shafik Rehman’s arrest.
The BNP secretary general said, “Awami League has become politically bankrupt.”
He said the ruling party was ‘lodging false cases’ and putting ‘people from the opposition and those having different opinions’ into jail.
“Basically this government has taken a stance against all forms of dissent and freedom of speech. They have one goal – to stay in the power at any cost,” Fakhrul said.
Police arrested Shafik Rehman on Saturday in a case over a conspiracy to abduct Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy. The law enforcers secured a five-day remand to quiz him.
Police on Tuesday said the BNP-leaning journalist had admitted to holding several meetings with those convicted by a US court for bribing a former FBI official to get information on Joy.
