The chairman was speaking as chief guest at the reception hosted by the party’s Dhaka City (North) unit at a restaurant in capital’s Gulshan on Thursday.

The deposed military dictator said it was the ‘right decision’ to bestow new responsibilities on his brother GM Quader and trusted leader Howlader.

At the beginning of his speech, he said Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Raushon was keen to attend the reception.

“Let me tell you something, just a little while ago Raushon had called up. She wanted to know where I was.

“I told her ‘I am at the reception for my brother.’  On hearing that she said, ‘Why didn’t you bring me along?’

“I told her even I was not supposed to be here. I too came suddenly,” he said.

In his speech, Ershad praised Howlader and criticised former secretary general Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu.

After Ershad announced making his brother co-chairman and his successor at a programme in Rangpur last month, a section of party’s Presidium members at a meeting in Dhaka appointed Raushon as acting chairperson.

After Bablu announced the decision of the section of presidium members, Ershad removed him from the post of secretary general and brought Howlader back.

But the parliamentary party rejected Ershad’s decision to appoint a co-chairman and replace the secretary general.

Quader, Howlader and Dhaka City (North) unit’s President SM Faisal Chishti spoke at the reception.
