“As part of a conspiracy, the government has lodged a number of cases against Khaleda Zia,” the BNP vice-chairman told pressmen after paying tributes to the party’s founder Ziaur Rahman at his grave in Dhaka on Thursday.

“The latest case is aimed at creating obstacles to the party’s central council in March and foiling its success. This is a conspiracy [of the government].”

However, no such plot can prevent the BNP from holding the council, said Noman.

The last central council of the party was held on Dec 8, 2009. On Jan 23 this year, the National Standing Committee, the highest policymaking forum of the BNP, decided to hold the next council in the third week of March.

Days later, the party applied for an allocation of Suhrawardy Udyan or the Engineers’ Institution Auditorium or the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka for the council venue.

“We have not yet got the venue. This too is part of the conspiracy,” BNP leader Noman alleged.

“The country’s democratic system gives us the right to hold councils. And so, we have the right to get a venue for that as well,” he added.
