The party’s Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Tuesday said that the current ruling party’s role during the 1971 was had always been questionable. “That’s why they (AL) always suffer from guilty conscience.”

“This is not my observation. I read this in Indian diplomat JN Dixit’s book ‘Beyond Liberation’,” he said.

“He (Dixit) wrote in the book that when he spoke to then Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the latter had expressed regret for not taking part in the War of Independence.”

“Much debate over the Liberation War will let the cat out of the bag  and the Awami League is scared of the truth coming out. And that’s why they are filing cases to shut mouths,” Rizvi told a press briefing at the BNP’s Naya Paltan headquarters.

A pro-AL lawyer last week had filed a sedition case against BNP chief Khaleda after she expressed doubt over the total number of people martyred during the Liberation War.

Taking the case into cognisance, a Dhaka court has summoned Khaleda to appear before it on Mar 3 to explain her remarks.

Several ministers and ruling party leaders insisted that similar cases should be filed against those who question the already resolved issues regarding the war.

Rizvi on Tuesday also came down hard on Information Minister and JaSaD President Hasanul Haq Inu for ‘slandering’ Khaleda Zia at his party’s council in Mymensingh recently.

“This, however, is nothing new. He (Inu) talks like this because he believes in this kind of culture,” said the BNP leader.

“Now, it seems his ministerial position depends on how much he can insult and talk against the BNP and Khaleda Zia.”

Rizvi claimed that militancy and terrorism in the country were first introduced in between 1972 and 1975 when JaSaD had created the ‘Ganabahini’.

He alleged Inu had been behaving then like slain al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden and JMB leader Shaikh Abdur Rahman, who was hanged in 2007.

He said Inu and all the others who were now murdering democracy, repressing the opposition and supporting extrajudicial killings would be tried in the people’s court soon.
