Their last National Council was held in December 2008, when Khandker Delwar Hossain was made the secretary general.

After his death in 2011, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was made the acting secretary general.

Khaleda Zia has been the party’s chairperson since 1983. She started her career in politics after the death of her husband former president Ziaur Rahman in 1981.

The latest addition to the party's top leadership during the last National Council was elevating Khaleda’s elder son Tarique Rahman to senior vice-chairman.

The party is supposed to organise a council every three years, but this time it is going to be held after seven years.

“Organising the district units ahead the council is a regular thing. It’s a prerequisite for holding councils,” BNP Standing Committee member Tarikul Islam told bdnews24.com.

Before holding the national council, BNP will have to nominate councillors.

According to the party’s article of association, presidents and general secretaries of units in districts, metropolitan cities, Upazilas and municipalities will be the councillors.

Apart from them, two women councillors will be nominated from each district and metropolitan units.

Several district units have already announced dates for their councils and more are in the process to wrap it up by February.

“There will be 3,000 councillors. We need a good venue to hold such a large event,” said Standing Committee Member Gaweshwar Chandra Roy.

The BNP has said that it will hold the national council next month, but is yet to announce a date as the venue has not been fixed.

It had written to concerned authorities to use either the Suhrawardy Udyan, Institute of Engineers auditorium or the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre, but is yet to get any response.

“We hope to get a response by this week. Once that is finalised, we will announce a date,” said BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
