He has made the appeal against the backdrop of the joining of several district leaders and activists of the Jamaat into the Awami League.

Speaking at a programme at the auditorium of the National Museum on Monday evening, he said there were many problems within the government on this issue.

“On the one hand, the prime minister is stating that Jamaat will not be spared, and on the other, leaders and activists of the organisation are joining Awami League. They are getting welcomed into the party fold with flowers,” he said.

“This party (Jamaat) has gradually destroyed the BNP.  Jamaat-isation of the BNP has been completed. Now it wants to inject the ideologies of Maududi into Awami League.

“The country will be in grave danger if the Awami League high command does not become careful about the situation,” he said.

The Jamaat came into being on Aug 26, 1941 under the leadership of Syed Abul A’la Maududi.

Shahriar Kabir made the observation at a programme to mark the 24th Foundation Day of the Muktijuddher Chetana Bastabayan Committee formed in early 90s to further the values of the Liberation War.

The committee was formed on June 15, 1992 after war criminal Ghulam Ajam was made chief of Jamaat on Dec 29, 1991.

Four days later, on June 19, 1992, under the leadership of Jahanara Imam, Ekattorer Ghatak-Dalal Nirmul Committee was formed. The two organisations later merged.
